Weyerhaeuser Company foundation gives local human service organizations a lift

FEDERAL WAY, Wash., December 21, 2009 — Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY). Like many Oregon communities wading through this difficult recession, Lane County residents in the Eugene-Springfield area are no different. Many local human service organizations are seeing extra need for its citizens. The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, based on the recommendations of its local area managers recently gave several grants to help people in need.
The organizations included: United Way of Lane County (LIVE UNITED Fund) - $40,000; Pearl Buck Center (Therapeutic Sensory Garden for adults with developmental disabilities) - $12,000; Catholic Community Services of Lane County (Eugene Community Service Center) - $5,000; Boys & Girls Club of Emerald Valley (feeding youth & families weekday meal program) - $ 5,000; Bags of Love (programs for children entering the foster care system) - $5,000; and, Lane Community College Foundation (Scholarships) - $5,000.
Mike McDowell, Western Timberlands Springfield Area Team Leader leads the company’s Lane Management Council that reviews grant applications that come to the Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation. “It has been clearer and clearer to us that the need for community help remains critical. We’ve been a part of this community for decades, so we want to help when and where we can,” he said.
James Manning, iLevel Engineered Wood Products Eugene, Assistant Plant Manager and a member of the council, recently delivered a Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation check to the Pearl Buck Center. “They were extremely excited to receive the check. So much so, that a happy dance broke out. It feels good to be able to help when times are tough,” he said.
