Weyerhaeuser to Close Honolulu Box Plant

Mar 13, 2008

HONOLULU, HI., March 13, 2008 Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY) today informed employees it will permanently close its Honolulu corrugated packaging facility affecting approximately 85 employees.

“Weyerhaeuser has enjoyed serving customers for fifty years in Hawaii, and it is with much regret that we announce the permanent closure of the Honolulu box plant,” said Ed Carter, Weyerhaeuser Containerboard Packaging and Recycling sales vice president. “We fully understand the significant impact of this decision on our employees, customers, suppliers and the community, and we will work constructively in the weeks ahead to alleviate these impacts as much as possible.”

Company officials will be providing job transition support to help employees find new employment in the local community.  Employees will receive benefits in accordance with company policy and labor contracts.

“We want to thank all the employees for their dedication to the company and to this facility.  They have performed admirably and would be an asset to any employer.  The decision was made to improve financial returns and enhance business competitiveness, and the closure is in no way related to the performance of our work force,” said Carter.

The company will be working with its Hawaiian customers to help identify ongoing supply options.
