Weyerhaeuser to Close Baltimore Box Plant
Jan 18, 2008
BALTIMORE, Md., January 18, 2008 — Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY) today informed employees it will permanently close its Baltimore corrugated packaging facility affecting approximately 104 employees.
“This was a very difficult decision,” said Jim Myers, Weyerhaeuser Containerboard Packaging and Recycling Supply vice president. “The need to improve financial returns of our business combined with our ability to serve customers using other Weyerhaeuser facilities were factors in the final determination. We fully understand the major impact of this decision on our employees, contractors and the community, and we will work constructively in the weeks ahead to alleviate these impacts as much as possible.”
Where possible, company officials are working with affected employees to consider employment alternatives at other Weyerhaeuser facilities in the region, Myers said.
“We want to thank all the employees for their dedication to the company and to this facility. They have performed admirably and would be an asset to any employer,” Myers said.
Employees, who are not retained, will receive benefits in accordance with company policy and labor contracts.
