"Consumers want environmentally sustainable packaging," says Tom Gideon, senior vice president, Containerboard Packaging & Recycling. "Our paper bags are recyclable and our grocery sacks contain 40 percent post consumer recycled content. This third-party, SFI certification offers further assurance that our forests are managed using sustainable forestry standards and that our paper manufacturing operations have certified procurement systems in compliance with the procurement provisions in the SFI standard."

To earn the use of the SFI-certified procurement label, two-thirds of a company's bag raw material must originate from mills with certified wood fiber procurement systems or recycled paper sources. Weyerhaeuser exceeds this standard with 75 percent of its bag plants' raw material qualifying toward the 2/3 requirement.

The SFI program is a comprehensive system of principles, objectives and performance measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists, scientists and other stakeholders from outside the industry. The program combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection of forest biodiversity, wildlife, plants, soil and water quality and other forest values. It also has a unique procurement system process for manufacturing operations that require outreach and promotion of SFI sustainable forestry principles to all outside sources of wood fiber and to monitor compliance with Best Management Practices (BMPs).
