Weyerhaeuser, Partners Celebrate 20-year Stewardship Project; 'Tee Up' The Home Course

What: Twenty years ago, the clean up of a former explosives manufacturing site posed one of the most daunting environmental challenges in Washington state's history. Today the restored site -- complete with a championship golf course and flanked by a 300-acre business and technology park now available for development and a master plan community that includes 1,000 acres in parks, recreation and open space -- stands as testament to the enduring power of partnership and environmental leadership. Speakers will recount the remarkable history of the area, recognize the critical roles of key partners, and convey the future stewardship role to the new owners of the golf course, the Washington State Golf Association and the Pacific Northwest Golf Association. Who: Presenters will include Steve Rogel, Weyerhaeuser chairman, president and CEO; Tom Fitzsimmons, chief of staff for Governor Christine Gregoire; Jay Manning, director of the Washington State Department of Ecology; and Dr. Allyson Brooks, Director of the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation and the State Historic Preservation Officer. Zelma McCloud, an elder of the Nisqually Tribe, will open the event with a tribal blessing. When: -- Friday, June 22 -- Noon, Picnic lunch -- 1:00 p.m., Program -- 1:45 p.m., golf fun on the putting green and driving range. Media are invited to all events. Where: The golf course at Northwest Landing, which is now called The Home Course, is 15 miles north of Olympia. From I-5, take Exit 118/Center Drive to DuPont. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right and proceed to McNeil Street. Turn left on McNeil and drive one mile. Turn right at Weyerhaeuser sign on to Hoffman Hill Boulevard and into the golf course.
