Grogan began leading recycling efforts in Boulder, Colo., in 1976 with the founding of an organization called Eco-Cycle. Since that time, Grogan has crusaded for the cause of recycling in nations all over the world and has developed solutions that have made it possible and worthwhile for countless communities to start recycling programs. He was nominated by Jack DeBell of the University of Colorado's recycling services.

"We're delighted that Pete is being recognized by such a prestigious organization, and we are impressed by his 30 years of dedication to resource conservation via recycling," said James R. Keller, Weyerhaeuser senior vice president, Containerboard Packaging and Recycling. "Pete has been a leader in advocating for recovering more recyclables as a way of boosting environmental and financial benefits for all sectors of society."

A world leader in recycling since 1974, Weyerhaeuser Recycling collects and sorts more than 50 grades of recovered paper at plants across the United States. The business consists of three main areas: recovered paper collection; recovered paper purchased from outside sources for use by Weyerhaeuser containerboard mills; and recovered paper sales to outside manufacturers. The business also provides document destruction services and includes a large national brokerage system. Weyerhaeuser collected 6.7 million tons of recovered paper in 2005 in North America. The company is testing new ways to recover even more. Weyerhaeuser is a significant producer of paper with recycled content, and it uses about two-thirds of what it collects to make new paper. The rest is sold to mills around the world to make products with recycled content. Recycling helps Weyerhaeuser customers "close the loop" by providing services that turn used-paper product into new ones in a continuous cycle.

Weyerhaeuser Company, one of the world's largest integrated forest products companies, was incorporated in 1900. In 2005, sales were $22.6 billion. It has offices or operations in 18 countries, with customers worldwide. Weyerhaeuser is principally engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber; the manufacture, distribution and sale of forest products; and real estate construction, development and related activities.
