The shutdowns are scheduled to begin on Jan. 3, 2007. Because of the indefinite nature of these production curtailments, employees are being given 90 days' working notice, as is required by Saskatchewan labor regulations.

"This announcement is to balance our production to our orders and is not based on the performance of the employees at Carrot River and Hudson Bay Plywood," said Fred Rowson, Weyerhaeuser area manager for softwood lumber. "Over the past months and years they have worked diligently to respond to each new challenge and to improve their performance. Unfortunately, the factors forcing the indefinite curtailment of operations at the mills are beyond their control."

Almost 300 employees are affected by the announcement -- 183 at the Hudson Bay plywood mill and 116 at the Carrot River sawmill.

The Hudson Bay mill produces softwood plywood for use in residential construction. The mill in Carrot River produces softwood lumber studs that are also used primarily in residential construction.
