Throughout the summer, New York City residents and visitors to the courtyard of P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center will enjoy the graceful architecture and shade provided by BEATFUSE! -- an award-winning installation by OBRA Architects. A key feature of the installation is a series of large, sweeping wooden arches, constructed of TimberStrand® laminated strand lumber (LSL) donated by iLevel™ by Weyerhaeuser.

BEATFUSE! is the winning design for The Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center's seventh annual Young Architects Program -- a prestigious competition providing an outlet for emerging young talent in architecture. The installation includes three outdoor spaces providing relief from the summer heat -- the largest of which is a "tepidarium" comprised of seven interconnected shells spanning the courtyard. The exposed beams of the shells are made from specially cut TimberStrand LSL and are a key structural and visual feature of the architecture.

"We chose TimberStrand for this project because it is very strong and consistent," said Pablo Castro, partner with OBRA Architects. "For the long-span arches of the tepidarium, the density of TimberStrand best provides the stiffness essential to support those structures."

TimberStrand LSL is a high-quality engineered wood product available for a wide range of residential and commercial building applications, including beams, rim board, treated sill plate, headers, columns and studs. It is recognized by builders for being consistently strong, straight and true.

"While BEATFUSE! is a somewhat unique use of TimberStrand, the project highlights the design flexibility and strength of the material," said John Grogan, Commercial Business Development Manager for iLevel. "We are proud to participate in this project and to support up and coming young architects who will define the future of the field." "Just as they innovate with design and use of materials, iLevel is committed to innovation, providing products, tools, and services that meet the evolving needs of architects and builders," Grogan added.

BEATFUSE! will be unveiled June 22, 2006 and will serve as the forum for the popular summer music series, Warm Up, held at P.S.1. Visit P.S.1 and BEATFUSE! at 22-25 Jackson Avenue (at the intersection of 46th Avenue) in Long Island City, Queens.
