To meet increased demand for bulk packaging, Weyerhaeuser Company is expanding its Exeter, California bulk bin plant. In June the company breaks ground on site improvements and relocates a corrugator from Cerritos to the expanded Exeter site.

When complete, the Exeter plant will encompass nearly 300,000 square feet, using a 500 foot long corrugator, which combines layers of containerboard. Exeter will be the largest bulk bin facility in the company's packaging system. The project enables the company to process Tri-Wall® sheets under one roof and will feature improved 4-color press capacity.

Exeter's bulk boxes are used to package industrial products; fresh produce, such as melons, lettuce, potatoes and citrus; as well as a variety of dairy products and frozen foods.

"The expansion will improve our to-market response and our ability to meet customer needs for high strength, high performance packaging," said Rick Goddard, director of bulk sales. He also stated that 30 - 60 additional employees will be hired to meet customer demand. In October 2005 the company discontinued its Cerritos-based finishing operations. Remaining Cerritos employees will be offered an opportunity to relocate to the Exeter plant. Information about employment at the expanded facility will be available in June.

The Exeter facility will continue to meet customer commitments and operate safely throughout construction, which is scheduled for completion in the fall. The newly expanded operation will start up in late November.

Weyerhaeuser employs nearly 3,000 people in California, operating from 25 facilities.
