A new addition to its shipping fleet will make business easier for Weyerhaeuser and other companies who export products between Canada and the United States. By offering a new and competitive way to transport cargo by sea, Weyerhaeuser is providing an alternative to costly and often unreliable ground transportation.

Westwood Shipping, the company's commercial marine shipping subsidiary, will operate the newly acquired Westwood Pomona between ports in British Columbia and Long Beach, California.
"By adding this new service to our own shipping line, Weyerhaeuser is in a unique position to build value for its businesses and for new customers," said Craig Lawrence, president, Westwood Shipping Line. "As ground transportation becomes increasingly challenging due to congestion and higher costs, we're offering a strong logistical alternative with cost, reliability and environmental benefits."
Operating a safe and environmentally responsible shipping service is also important to Westwood Shipping, which now surpasses standards required for international shipping. The company has pledged to comply with the Port of Long Beach's new Green Flag vessel speed reduction program to improve air quality. "We initiated the Green Flag program this year," said Don Snyder, the Port's Trade and Maritime Services Director. "We want fleet operators like Westwood Shipping to join in helping us reduce air emissions from ships in Port."
The Westwood Pomona will make round trip voyages between British Columbia and the Port of Long Beach, carrying cargo for Weyerhaeuser and other companies. To obtain shipping rates and schedules, interested parties should contact Tim Healey at (253) 924-3528.
About the Westwood Pomona
The Westwood Pomona is a 10,200-gt freight side loader (also known as a "sto-ro"). Built in 1985, the vessel was previously named the Kent Loyalist and was owned by the Finnish carrier Birka Cargo. The vessel was renamed after Weyerhaeuser's first ship, the SS Pomona, purchased in 1923 to transport wood products between North American ports. This original ship sailed for Weyerhaeuser for 23 years, including service as a military transport in World War II. The Westwood Pomona joins seven other ships in the Westwood Shipping fleet. It has been outfitted to transport a wide variety of commodities.
