At a dedication ceremony, Brad Chalfant, the trust's executive director, accepted the check from Rich Wininger, marketing director for Weyerhaeuser's Western Timberlands business.
In addition, Wininger presented Chalfant with a small bag of Ponderosa Pine seeds. The token gift to the land trust represents a larger donation of seeds that, when grown into seedlings, will mature into 60,000 to 70,000 pine trees.
The land trust acquired 1,240 acres of forestland from Weyerhaeuser last year. The parcel is on Lake Creek, a tributary to Central Oregon's Metolius River, north of Sisters.
"From the start Weyerhaeuser has been pivotal in making this project a success," Chalfant said. "Weyerhaeuser has been extremely helpful with technical support to the land trust and the gift of pine seed furthers that partnership. Moreover, as we come down the final stretch in this $3.1 million capital campaign, Weyerhaeuser's gift of $50,000 is a really huge boost to our stewardship efforts."
Chalfant said 1,240-acre parcel is the largest private holding on the Metolius River or any of its tributaries.
Richard E. Hanson, Weyerhaeuser's executive vice present and chief operating officer, said Weyerhaeuser's donation will be used to help manage the property.
"After passing responsibility for the property to the trust, we wanted to provide some resources for stewardship planning and commitment," Hanson said.
A land trust is a private, nonprofit conservation organization formed to protect natural resources such as productive farm and forest land, natural areas, historic structures and recreational areas. Land trusts purchase and accept donations of conservation easements. They educate the public about the need to conserve land, and some provide land use and estate planning services to local governments and individual citizens.
The Deschutes Basin Land Trust works cooperatively with landowners and communities in the Deschutes Basin, which includes lands drained by the Metolius, Deschutes and Crooked rivers. The area covers roughly 11 percent of Oregon and encompasses significant portions of six counties.
Weyerhaeuser Company, one of the world's largest integrated forest products companies, was incorporated in 1900. In 2003, sales were $19.9 billion. It has offices or operations in 18 countries, with customers worldwide. Weyerhaeuser is principally engaged in the growing and harvesting of timber; the manufacture, distribution and sale of forest products; and real estate construction, development and related activities.
