Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY) and Coast Mountain Hardwoods, Inc. today announced an agreement to settle a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Portland, Ore. Under the terms of the agreement, Weyerhaeuser will pay $14 million before taxes in a settlement of all claims with no admission of liability.

The plaintiffs originally sought more than $820 million, but revised their filing to seek approximately $420 million -- $90 million after trebling for attempted monopolization of alder sawlog and finished lumber markets, and $330 million for alleged fraud.

Weyerhaeuser said the settlement will result in an after-tax charge of about $9 million, or 4 cents per share, in the first quarter. The company is a defendant in another antitrust case relating to alder filed in U.S. District Court in Portland, Ore., that is scheduled to go to trial on May 11.
