Plum Creek Timber Co. Announces Three New Board Members

SEATTLE, Oct 4, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc.(NYSE:PCL) today announced the expansion of its Board of Directors to elevenmembers and the election of three new directors effective October 6 inconnection with the closing of its merger with The Timber Company, the timberoperating division of Georgia-Pacific Corporation. The three new directors areJoe E. Beverly, Stephen C. Tobias, and Sam A. Williams.

Mr. Beverly, 60, is Chairman of the Commercial Bank of Thomasville, Georgia.Commercial Bank is part of the Synovus Financial Corporation. Mr. Beverly, whosebanking career spans four decades, holds a BBA and an MBA from the University ofGeorgia. He has served on many industry and community boards and currentlyserves on the board of directors of Synovus Financial Corp. and Flowers Foods,Inc.

Mr. Tobias, 56, is Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer of Norfolk SouthernCorporation, the Virginia-based holding company that owns a major freightrailroad, Norfolk Southern Railway Company; a natural resources company,Pocahontas Land Corporation; and telecommunications company, ThoroughbredTechnology and Telecommunications, Inc. Mr. Tobias joined Norfolk and WesternRailway, a Norfolk Southern predecessor, in 1969 and served in a range ofmanagement positions until 1998, when he was named to his current position. Mr.Tobias holds a BA from The Citadel and completed the Advanced Management Programat the Harvard Business School.

Mr. Williams, 56, has served as President of the Metro Atlanta Chamber ofCommerce since 1996. Before taking on his leadership role at the chamber Mr.Williams was President of Central Atlanta Progress, a private businessorganization leading the redevelopment of downtown Atlanta prior to the 1996Olympics. From 1973 to 1994 Mr. Williams was Executive Vice President of ThePortman Companies, a real estate development firm managing a $2 billion realestate portfolio in the U.S., Middle East and Asia. Mr. Williams holds a BS inElectrical Engineering from the Georgia Tech and an MBA from Harvard University.
