Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection Special Exhibit August 18 through September 27, 2006 'Traditions and Transitions -- Arts of the Earth'

Eight distinguished Northwest ceramic artists and the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection celebrate the parallel paths of two art forms Aug. 18 through Sept. 27 at the "Traditions and Transitions -- Arts of the Earth" exhibit.

Featured artists for this exhibit include Britt Dietrich, Damian Grava, Sequoia Miller, Hank Murrow, Peter Olsen, Reid Ozaki, Stephen Sullivan, and Ben Waterman. Influenced by the Japanese ceramic traditions, these ceramists use a variety of techniques -- from the folk art tradition of hand forming and wood firing to more modern methods -- to achieve unique works that speak to both the spiritual and practical needs of life.

Though several works are featured individually, each artist has specifically created a piece to interact with a bonsai selected from PRBC's permanent collection.

"Both the ceramic works and bonsai share origins of the earth - the ceramic being made of it and the bonsai growing from it. From those origins each work has evolved into a unique entity, yet together, they create a new vision that is more than the sum of its parts," says Dave De Groot, curator of the PRBC.

"The multi-element compositions of "Traditions and Transitions" are firmly rooted in the Japanese tradition of tokonoma display, but are created on their own terms, for their own time."

The Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection is located on Weyerhaeuser Company's corporate campus, 33663 Weyerhaeuser Way South in Federal Way. Hours are 10 AM - 4 PM, Friday through Wednesday, closed Thursday. Admission is free. Visit www.weyerhaeuser.com/bonsai for more information.
