Safety Concerns Prompt Closure of Weyerhaeuser's Forest Learning Center

Safety concerns related to Mount St. Helens have prompted closure of the Charles Bingham Forest Learning Center, officials from Weyerhaeuser and the Washington State Department of Transportation said today.

"Safety is our highest priority at Weyerhaeuser," said Montye Male, Weyerhaeuser's vice-president of Corporate Communications. "In this situation we would rather err on the side of caution."

The closure will remain in effect until further notice.

The Forest Learning Center is a free, family-oriented visitor center located in the 1980 blast zone of Mount St. Helens. The Center's mission is to educate the public about the role of active forest management in the recovery of the ecosystem following Mount St. Helens' 1980 eruption.

The Forest Learning Center is one of three visitor centers on Spirit Lake Memorial Highway (Highway 504). It is sponsored by the Washington Department of Transportation, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Weyerhaeuser.
